EV route planner: more reliable journeys with Chargemap

Setting off on a road trip in an electric car comes with a little apprehension too: what if a charging stop added time to the whole journey? What if the planned charging point was out of order? Chargemap is evolving its route planner to make your long-distance journeys even more reliable, right across Europe.

Key Takeaways

  • A route planner that calculates your journey 2 times faster
  • Better optimised journeys: fewer detours, fewer U-turns, up to 22 km less driving on average
  • The biggest benefit for smaller batteries, with fewer charging stops needed
  • Your preferences better respected, with 100% Chargemap Pass compatibility

A route planner designed and built by our own teams

The Chargemap route planner runs on a calculation engine built in-house, with algorithms designed and refined by our technical teams. This full control over the engine lets us fine-tune every parameter, charging point reliability, real-world vehicle behaviour, network constraints, for ever more reliable journeys.

1. A faster route planner, for a better optimised journey

Even before you hit the road, you save time: the planner now calculates your route around 2 times faster than before (1 second compared to almost 2 seconds), and up to 4 times faster on some routes.

2. Better optimised routes

Once you're on the road, the suggested route is also better thought out. In our internal tests, the new calculation engine reduces the number of U-turns by 70% and unnecessary motorway exits by 18%, for a route that is, on average, 22 km more direct.

3. The biggest benefit, for smaller batteries

Shorter-range vehicles benefit the most from these improvements, precisely where range anxiety is felt most. For a 27.5 kWh city car, for example, a route that previously required 10 charging stops now needs only 8 with the new route planner, cutting journey time by almost 40 minutes.

4. Fewer stops, more peace of mind on the road

A more reliable journey mainly means fewer unpleasant surprises. In our tests, the number of charging stops drops by around 10%, departures with an overly low battery become 6 times rarer, and stops take place at charging points with noticeably more reliable availability.

5. Your charging preferences better respected

The route planner always excludes your networks to avoid, with no exceptions in our tests, and compatibility with the Chargemap Pass remains guaranteed at 100% on the suggested route.

6. An even more advantageous cheapest route (Chargemap Boost subscribers only)

For your holidays or long weekends in an EV, your charging budget matters too. If you're a Chargemap Boost subscriber, the planner's cheapest route sees a marked improvement in our tests, with significant cost differences on some long-distance routes. That's more room left in the budget for the rest of your trip.

How did we test these improvements?

Our teams compared both versions of the route planner on the same dataset: over 1,000 requests, 184 real routes, 5 European countries, 5 vehicle profiles, and more than 241,000 charging points, with the same tariffs and the same terrain for both versions tested. These results come from our internal testing phase. They provide a representative trend of the improvements made, but results observed in production may vary depending on real-world traffic and charging conditions.

How do you benefit from these improvements?

This route planner update is rolling out directly in the Chargemap app. Make sure to update it to enjoy these improvements on your next journey. Don't have it yet? Now's a great time to install it.
